Essential Oils and Blends

What is an essential oil?

Essential oils comes from plants, flowers and trees. They are primarily extracted through careful steam distillation, but also through cold pressing. The purest essential oils are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they were extracted.

What's different about Young Living essential oils?

The difference is in the quality of the oils. Young Living is unique in that they own their own farms around the world to grow the plants, botanicals and trees which are distilled to produce Young Living’s essential oils and blends. The founder, D. Gary Young, can be found onsite planting, harvesting, and distilling at various farms – who else does this?

Young Living’s oils are pure. They’re tested for synthetics, pesticides and other contaminants. Young Living doesn’t just test — they control every detail of an oil, from the seed used, to planting the botanical through care, harvest and distillation.

Young Living is also the first and only company in the world to obtain permission to distill and export Sacred Frankincense in Oman and bring it to the Western world. Young Living also works with partner farms that meet their strict guidelines for seeds, planting, caring and harvesting. In every way, you’ll find that Young Living is always a step ahead in pioneering the essential oil industry. This is why Young Living has over 500 oils, oil-infused products and other healthy living products, just for you and your family!

What is therapeutic grade?

You might hear someone claim that therapeutic grade is just a marketing term. This couldn’t be further from the truth. D. Gary Young, the founder of Young Living, coined the term therapeutic grade to describe oils coming from Young Living’s exclusive Seed to Seal® process.

Each essential oil Young Living distills has the highest naturally-occurring blend of constituents to maximize the desired effect. This is the Young Living Therapeutic Grade™ (YLTG) promise. Take clove for example: While the clove stem and leaf are certainly less expensive to distill and have the same aroma as oil distilled from the flower, you will not find the highest amount of the naturally-occurring eugenol in essential oils that are distilled from these parts of the plant. This is one of the many examples that represent the extra work, care and attention required to produce Young Living Therapeutic Grade essential oils.

Can essential oils be ingested?

Young Living offers a specific line of oils called the Vitality Line that are designed for safe ingestion. The FDA also maintains a list of essential oils that are recognized as safe in Title 21 Part 182. However, note: many essential oils are not produced the right way, and are not safe to ingest. Even when ingesting an essential oil regarded as safe by the FDA, we recommend only Young Living. At Oily Gurus we have personally been to Young Living farms and listened to their chemists talk about the difference in a pure Seed to Seal™ oil.

Are Young Living essential oils organic?

Many Young Living farms exist outside the jurisdiction of the government agencies that grant the organic certification. However, the good news is that Young Living’s exclusive Seed to Seal™ promise trumps organic all together. Seed to Seal means much more than just a pesticide-free product. Do oils interact with a prescription medication?

Always consult a health care provider when using an essential oil if you’re taking a medication. In fact, always consult with a trusted and educated health care provider if you have questions about using an essential oil in or on your body in any way. Even though Title 21 Part 182 of the FDA food guidelines lists many essentials oils as “generally” safe, this does not release anyone from the personal responsibility of checking with their trusted health care provider to make sure it’s right for them. At Oily Gurus we’ve seen many healthcare professionals offer Young Living essential oils to their clients. (And many professionals are members in our Young Living family!)

Can I use essential oils while pregnant or nursing?

For some, it can be difficult to decide whether to use essential oils in pregnancy, and there are a wide variety of opinions on the matter. The best answer: It’s important to discuss usage with a trusted healthcare professional experienced with essential oils and to be judicious with their use. Some women avoid clary sage or sage, Idaho tansy or hyssop, fennel, wintergreen and any blends and supplements that contain these oils. However, there are no hard and fast rules. As with use in non-pregnant individuals, essential oil usage is individualized—just be sure you’re following label directions. Some of Young Living’s products are well loved and well-tolerated by pregnant women and women who are lactating. Read more about this from Young Living’s own Dr. Lindsey Elmore.
