You might hear other wellness companies claim therapeutic grade is a useless marketing term. This couldn’t be further from the truth. D. Gary Young, the founder of Young Living, coined the term therapeutic grade to describe oils coming from Young Living’s exclusive Seed to Seal® process. Those taking shots at the term are simply late to the game, or trying to discredit the industry leading quality of Young Living products.
The Merriam Webster dictionary gives one definition for therapeutic as “producing good effects on your body or mind.” Since many essential oils are able to naturally have a positive affect on the emotions, this alone qualifies them. Other oils are regarded by the FDA as safe for ingestion, and they support a healthy body.
Each essential oil Young Living distills has the highest naturally-occurring blend of constituents to maximize the desired effect. This is the YLTG promise. Take clove for example: While the stem and leaf are certainly less expensive to distill and have the same aroma as oil distilled from the flower, you will not find the highest amount of the naturally-occurring eugenol from these parts of the plant. This is one of the many examples that represent the extra work, care and attention required to produce Young Living Therapeutic Grade essential oils (read more on the Young Living blog).
Laboratory testing is a must for verifying the quality and purity of any essential oil, whether originating from a Young Living farm or partner farm. In the lab, technicians analyze the compounds of an oil to verify things are as they should be. How is this done? By comparing each compound making up the oil, to libraries in the lab.
Laboratories have libraries of compounds stored within their chromatographic computer systems. These libraries take years to build up, and they also can be purchased for specific industries such as the pharmaceutical or petrochemical industry. As the oldest essential oil company, Young Living laboratory libraries contain millions of compounds that allow them to correctly analyze the purity and therapeutic quality of an essential oil.
Any chemist will tell you that more than one method of testing is required to produce an accurate analysis. Young Living introduces 8 or more methods of testing in their manufacturing process, which causes 10-day delays to their supply chain. This dedication to quality is foundation of the therapeutic grade label. See our Can You Trust Young Living? post for more information.
If you’re using oils in foods, then food grade essential oils are fine. However, the warning we issue is this: too many oils out there are not sourced from quality farms, and in some cases even have fillers. Young Living offers a specific line of oils called the Vitality Line which are sourced with the same Seed to Seal® guarantee as their therapeutic singles and blends.
